HISTORY

In 1871 Mr. Jean-Alfred Moisan founded a grocery store which specialized in fine imports designated for the affluent and decerning cliental of the Upper Town. It was here, even during this early time, that one could find products which were not to be found anywhere else. In the city business guide of the time J.A. Moisan was listed as a grocer, while in addition he was also registered, in large bold print, as "Wine and Liquor Dealer." This was, and reasonably so, as a result of his cognizance of the management of such commodities. Jean-Alfred lvIoisan was a man of moral standards; he laboured arduously throughout the work week. Sunday, however, was the day he would put on his best cloths, attend the sunday service, and rest, preparing well for the following week. ln 1927 the man, Jean-Alfred passed on imparting the grocery store to his family. The business thereafter passed from father to son each dedicated to conserving the integrity and family ideals of the founder. In 1978 the grocery store was procured by an antique dealer who in turn sold it to the existing owners in 1999. Not unlike the founder, the attending proprietors understand the truth of the truism, "inanimate objects have their own soul." Over the years, the enterprise has accumulate a vast quantity of riches all reanimating the spirit of the past. These preserved objects, each retaining within themselves the love whith which they were cherished, help us to perpetuate the founding ideology. J.A. Moisan is both a museum and emporium yet with the best modern products. The building dates to the beginning of the eighteen hundreds. In 1990, the building was renovated facilitating efficient friendly service while allowing the Founder's work to persevere. Still today, rare products can be found here and served with good old fashioned courtesy. J.A. Moisan is revered by the Quebec citizens, for it is here where one can rediscover the real life of the. community. The community not only comes for our fine products and service, but to fill their heart with warmth and happy memories in an atmosphere that is really quite exceptional. If accordingly, Quebec city is a treasure in the culture of the World, J.A. Moisan a Gem of Quebec city, an unsurpassed return to the Good old Days. TIc Oldest Grocery store in North America was founded in 1871 by J.A. Moisan and continues to respect our forefathers by reflecting their past.
